MEET OUR INSTRUCTORS

Joan Fetty

Joan has been involved in dog training all her life.  Her Childhood included a father who, with Joan, trained family cats, birds and dogs!  Formal Obedience, Tracking and Field as well as Herding work did not become a possibility until 1979, when Joan got her first Golden Retriever. Together they earned American and Canadian Tracking Dog Excellent and Obedience Titles.

A Border Collie followed with Obedience, Tracking and Herding titles.  Joan's recent dogs have earned Tracking, Obedience and Field titles.  Joan and her husband Bob, have Utility, Master Hunter, Herding and Tracking Dog Excellent titles in American, Canadian and United Kennel Clubs.  Two of Joan's dogs are currently licensed for Pet Therapy work.  And of course, all her dogs earn their Canine Good Citizen titles!

Joan has taught dog training since 1982.  A move to Woodinville made a training building possible in 1985.  Since that time, Joan has enjoyed seeing more than 20,000 dogs come through her doors. Many students are return students with new dogs.

Joan has contributed articles to Front and Finish Magazine for two years, introducing information about AKC, UKC and CKC Hunt Tests, procedures, training & anecdotes.  She is a long standing member of Washington State Obedience Training Club, Evergreen Golden Retriever Club, The Golden Retriever Club of America, Puget Sound Labrador Retriever Club,  & Rainier Hunting Retriever Club.  She was one of the first members of the Monroe Valley Dog Training Club and a founding member of the Whistling Wings Hunting Retriever Club. Joan maintains involvement in her memberships, donating time and service on show committees chairmanships and Boards.

"Doing things with your dog can lead to a life long hobby and strong friendships with people who also enjoy their animals.  That is our hope for all students"

Karen Hanka

Karen has been with us here at Positive Dog Training since 1989.  Starting with a Rottweiler and then a Shetland Sheepdog and Golden Retriever, she was later smitten by Afghan Hounds and trained and titled three of them in multiple venues.

She has titled her dogs in AKC, CKC and UKC with multiple CD's, CGC's and specialty titles including VCC's, VCCX, Rally, Therapy Dog, Junior Hunter, Retriever Working Certificate, and Conformation Championships, and is currently owned by an Afghan Hound and a Shiba Inu.

She is an endorsed member of the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors (since 1997), the Afghan Hound Club of America (since 2000), the Evergreen Afghan Hound Club (since 1993, including club positions of Board Member and Specialty Show Chairman), an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator (since 2001), and retired Seattle Pure Bred Dog Rescue Rep for Afghan Hounds.

Her teaching style is fast-paced, honest, creative, and fun, with emphasis on getting the most out of your relationship with your dog.

Pam Overstreet

Pam's first dog loves were Collies and during the six years of her daughter's 4-H training, Pam was "bitten" by the obedience bug.

After losing one collie to cancer in 1989, she raised a Sheltie and earned his UD Obedience title as well as several agility titles.

She now has three Shelties all working and titled in several venues at the same time including receiving multiple HITs (High in Trials) with her youngest boy Jacob.

Besides competition obedience, Pam has experience and titles in agility, rally, beginning tracking as well as Therapy Dog.

Pam began training with Joan Fetty at Positive Dog Training in 1990 and has been teaching for PDT since 1998.

"In the classroom, I love the light bulb that appears above the heads of the dogs and the handlers when they really "get it."  That makes it all worthwhile!"

Kathy Brown

Kathy Brown’s passion for training dogs was sparked early in life.  As a youngster she could be found in front of the TV role playing along with Lassie.  Kathy’s first dog was a collie and together they participated in 4-H.

In 1998 Kathy decided to seriously persue her passion. She began obedience classes and was hooked.  Within one year Kathy was assisting our instructors in class. She assisted for several years, has attended obedience seminars and began teaching in 2001.

Kathy has three dogs, a Rottweiler, Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Jack Russell Terrier. Her interest in different breeds gives her experience in training various challenges. Kathy’s rottweiler has obedience titles in AKC and UKC, has earned her Canine Good Citizen and is a certified therapy dog.  Kathy is currently Co-President of the Monroe Valley Dog Training Club.

Kathy’s primary focus with her dogs is competing in obedience, she also enjoys rally, agility, herding and therapy work. At home Kathy also has two horses and many other critters.

The bond we share with our dogs has always fascinated her, understanding and embracing that relationship is an ongoing education. Kathy’s goal is to enhance the joyful connection you share with your dog.

Corinne Lawson

Corinne Lawson has been with Positive Dog Training since 1998, first as a student and then as an assistant the following year.

She has been now teaching with PDT since 2001.

Mutts and Corinne have had a long love relationship.  She was happiest taking care of the neighborhood dogs who needed that extra bit of love.   Corinne started real obedience training over 15 years ago with her then 7 year old mutt and has been involved in teaching obedience since.

She has owned a variety of dog breeds for a long time.  She currently is owned by an Australian Shepherd, English Shepherd mix and Miniature American Eskimo. They all have fun and titles in Obedience, Rally, Agility and Freestyle. Her dogs are also CGC titled as well.  She is a member of the Monroe Valley Dog Training Club, Paws 2 Dance Freestyle Club, Emerald City Canine Freestylers,  Rainer Agility Team, and a past member of the Mixed Breed Dog Club of America.  Her main "loves" besides obedience are Agility and Freestyle.

"I love teaching and seeing the wonderful progress our human and dog teams make as they go through class.  I can't wait to get you started!"

Cindy Bowers

Cindy has been teaching with Positive Dog Training since 2003 but has been working as an assistant and training with Joan Fetty for 15 years.

Cindy's greatest talent is rescuing dogs and working with "problem dog children".  Cindy has been with the Seattle Purebred Dog Rescue for the last seven years but has been rescuing dogs for the last twenty years.

Cindy enjoys working with her dogs in Conformation, Hunt Trials, Formal Obedience and Rally Obedience.  She has also enjoyed Agility before one could title in agility!

Her current family includes two Irish Setters, a Golden Retriever, a Jack Russell Terrier and a Black Lab.

"I look forward to meeting and working with you!"
